How to Mend a Broken Heart

"God breaks the heart again and again and again until it stays open." -Hazrat Inayat Khan

No one goes through a lifetime without experiencing heartbreak, and we all know someone who seems to have suffered more than their fair share. It is painful to experience and painful to observe in others.

But the heartbreak itself is not what matters most. What matters most is how we respond when our hearts are broken.

Do we allow the pain to open us and change us in ways that make us more compassionate or do we shut down, becoming bitter and angry? Do we learn and grow stronger from the experience or do we become fearful, vowing never to open ourselves in that way again?

We can keep reliving the story of heartbreak over and over, picking away at the scab of pain, or we can allow healing to take place, taking with us only the lessons learned that make us kinder, more humble, and more loving.

As difficult as it may be, we must open our hearts, even when it's painful, in order to grow in love.
"Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it." -  (Song of Solomon 8:7a)
